The 205 launched in 1983 as Peugeot’s strategic reset. Jean Boillot’s directive was blunt: if this car fails, the company fails. Gérard Welter’s in-house team won the design competition against Pininfarina. Paul Bracq designed the interior.
The GTI arrived in 1984 with 105 PS. The definitive 1.9 followed in 1986 with 130 PS. Production totalled 330,987 GTIs across ten years. At 875 kg, the 1.9 GTI weighs less than any hot hatch on sale today.
The 1.9 GTI’s defining metric is weight: 875 kg. The XU9JA produces 130 PS at 6,000 rpm. Front-wheel drive through a five-speed manual gearbox.
MacPherson struts front, trailing arms with torsion bars rear. Four-wheel disc brakes standard on the 1.9. Steering unassisted on earlier cars — 3.2 turns lock-to-lock. 0 to 100 km/h: 8.0 seconds.
CAR magazine named the 205 GTI Car of the Decade in 1990. The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 won the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, and Paris–Dakar twice. The GTI inherited the reflected prestige.
Sir Stirling Moss owned a GTI and publicly praised its manoeuvrability. Since 2015, values for unmolested 1.9 examples have climbed steadily; modification now carries a market penalty.
The 205 GTI’s primary enemies are corrosion and prior modification.
Before you buy. Inspect sills, floor pans, rear arches. Rust is the primary structural concern.
Common faults. Thermostat housing cracks. XU timing belt strict 60,000 km schedule. Suspension bushes wear gradually.
Originality. Unmodified 1.9 examples in matching paint command a significant premium.
