The windscreen wiper system removes rain, snow, dirt, and debris from the windscreen to maintain driver visibility in adverse conditions. It consists of the wiper motor (which drives the wiper arm mechanism), the wiper linkage (a mechanism that converts the motor's rotation into the wipers' arc movement), the wiper arms (spring-loaded pivoting arms that press the rubber blades against the glass), and the wiper blades themselves (the rubber or silicone elements that contact and sweep the glass). The washer system supplements the wipers by delivering cleaning fluid from a reservoir to jets positioned at the base of the windscreen or through the wiper arms, allowing the wipers to spread the solution across the glass to remove dried contamination. Rear wiper systems on hatchbacks, estate cars, and SUVs use a single wiper on the tailgate glass. Most vehicles also have headlight washers as part of the headlight assembly on high-specification models, to maintain headlight output in winter conditions. Modern wiper systems use rain-sensing automatics that adjust wiper speed to rainfall intensity, reducing driver distraction in changing conditions.
The wiper blade's rubber compound must maintain consistent contact pressure across its entire length against a curved glass surface while travelling through an arc. The blade's rubber element must be flexible enough to follow the glass contour without skipping or chattering, yet firm enough to clear water effectively in a single pass at any speed. The spring-loaded wiper arm maintains the correct blade contact pressure — typically 200–450 grams per 100mm of blade length — as the arm travels through its arc. Wind lift (the tendency of the blade to lift off the glass at highway speed) is countered by spoilers on conventional frame blades and by the aerodynamic profile of beam blades. Beam blades (a single curved spring steel rail with an integrated rubber element) have replaced conventional hinged-frame blades on most modern vehicles because their uniform pressure distribution eliminates the pressure points created by a frame's multiple contact pins, providing superior clearance on curved windscreens. The wiper motor typically drives both front wiper arms through a five-bar linkage mechanism, ensuring both wiper arcs are synchronised and both blades return to the correct parked position when switched off.
Streaking, smearing, or skipping: The most common wiper issue. Rubber blades harden, split, or develop a permanent curve with age, preventing full contact with the glass surface. UV exposure, ozone, and heat cycling degrade the rubber. Wiper blades should be replaced every 6–12 months regardless of visible condition — the rubber's contact properties degrade before visible damage appears.
Wiper chattering or squealing: A sharp, rhythmic noise during each stroke indicates the rubber is not sliding smoothly on the glass — caused by contamination on the blade (dried washer fluid deposits, road grime), a worn or hardened rubber edge, or incorrect wiper arm spring tension. Clean the blade and glass with diluted washer fluid and test — if chattering persists, replace the blades.
Wipers not parking in the correct position: The wiper motor park circuit (a separate set of electrical contacts inside the motor) should return the wipers to the parked position at the base of the windscreen when switched off. A failed park circuit leaves the wipers stopped in mid-sweep, blocking driver vision and freezing in position in cold weather. This requires wiper motor replacement.
Level 1 — Seasonal Inspection: Inspect wiper blade condition at the start of each wet season and before winter. Lift each blade and run a finger along the rubber edge — it should be smooth, straight, and flexible. Any cracking, splits, hardness, or permanent bend indicates replacement is needed. Fill the washer reservoir with the appropriate formula — winter-rated fluid (rated to -20°C or below) in cold climates, or summer formula with bug-dissolving additives in warmer seasons. Never fill with plain water in climates where freezing is possible.
Level 2 — Annual Replacement: Replace wiper blades every 6–12 months as preventive maintenance regardless of visible condition. Rubber degradation that reduces effectiveness is not always visually obvious but impairs visibility in rain. Clean the windscreen glass and blade rubber with dedicated glass cleaner before installing new blades — old wax, silicone, and washer fluid deposits on the glass cause new blades to skip and chatter immediately.
Level 3 — Wiper Motor or Linkage Diagnosis: If wipers operate at only one speed, park incorrectly, or move sluggishly, the fault may be in the motor, the linkage, or the wiper relay. Before replacing the motor, check the wiper fuse and relay. Confirm the linkage pivot points move freely — seized pivots greatly increase motor load, causing slow operation and eventual motor burnout. Lubricate all linkage pivot points with a thin application of lithium grease at every annual service.
