What it is

Wheel bearings are precision rolling-element bearings that support the vehicle's weight at each wheel while allowing the wheel and hub to rotate freely with minimal friction. Modern vehicles use sealed, pre-greased double-row angular contact ball bearings (hub bearing units) on most axle positions, requiring no adjustment and sealed for life. Older vehicles and some trucks use tapered roller bearing pairs that require periodic adjustment and regreasing. The hub bearing unit presses into the wheel knuckle and is retained by a central hub nut tightened to a specific torque. The sealed unit contains the outer and inner bearing races, the rolling elements, and the cage, along with the ABS tone ring on one or both faces in modern designs — integrating the ABS encoder with the bearing in a single sealed assembly. Wheel bearings operate under three simultaneous load types: radial load (vehicle weight acting downward through the hub), axial load (lateral forces during cornering acting along the axle), and moment loads from offset wheel contact forces. They must support these loads over millions of wheel rotations, making fatigue of the bearing races and contamination from failed seals the primary failure mechanisms.

What it does

The wheel bearing provides the low-friction interface between the stationary axle or hub carrier and the rotating hub and wheel. Without bearings, the wheel would require significant force to turn and the contact surfaces would wear rapidly from the friction of vehicle weight bearing directly on the rotating joint. The angular contact design of modern hub units allows them to support both radial and axial loads simultaneously — critical because cornering generates substantial lateral force at the tyre contact patch that is transmitted through the hub to the bearing. The bearing's internal clearance (the precise amount of play between the rolling elements and the races) is set during manufacture and is non-adjustable on sealed units. Incorrect clearance — either too tight (causing overheating and accelerated fatigue) or too loose (causing noise, vibration, and tyre wear) — is established by manufacturing rather than field adjustment. The bearing is lubricated for life by the factory-installed grease contained within the seal. If the seal is damaged and contamination enters, or if impact damage alters the internal geometry, the bearing degrades rapidly and must be replaced. Hub bearing units cannot be serviced — they are replaced as complete sealed assemblies.

What goes wrong

Humming or growling noise that varies with speed and load: The most common wheel bearing symptom. As bearing races and rolling elements develop fatigue pitting, they generate a characteristic continuous hum or growl proportional to vehicle speed (not engine speed). The noise changes character when the vehicle is loaded laterally — cornering one direction loads one bearing more and may cause the noise to increase or decrease. To identify the affected wheel: at 60–80 km/h, gently weave the vehicle left and right and listen for the noise to change in one direction — noise that intensifies on weaving right typically indicates a fault on the right wheel bearing (increased right-turn lateral load).

Vibration felt through the seat or floor: Advanced bearing wear generates vibration in addition to noise, particularly at specific speed ranges that excite the natural frequency of the bearing's deteriorated elements. The vibration may transmit through the suspension into the body.

ABS warning light with a wheel speed sensor code on the same corner: On modern vehicles where the tone ring is integral to the hub bearing, bearing play or an internal crack that disrupts the tone ring surface triggers the ABS sensor, activating the warning light and disabling ABS. A scan tool code pointing to a specific wheel that matches the corner producing hub noise strongly suggests bearing replacement is the solution.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Noise Detection: Listen for wheel bearing noise by identifying a hum that varies strictly with vehicle speed (not engine speed) and is present both on and off the throttle. Test on a smooth road surface at 60–80 km/h to isolate the sound from tyre and wind noise. The directional load test (gentle weaving while listening) helps identify which corner is affected. Any detectable noise at normal driving speeds indicates bearing wear that will progress to failure — monitor closely and plan replacement promptly.

Level 2 — Play Inspection: With the vehicle on a lift and the wheel hanging free, grasp the tyre at the top and bottom (12 and 6 o'clock positions) and rock forcefully inward and outward. Any play detectable as movement in the hub — separate from tyre flex — indicates bearing play requiring replacement. Also rotate the wheel by hand and listen for roughness or grinding within the bearing. Compare against the opposite wheel for reference.

Level 3 — Professional Replacement: Hub bearing unit replacement typically requires pressing the old unit from the knuckle and pressing the new unit in, or in some designs, unbolting the entire hub unit. Correct bearing preload (hub nut torque) is critical — the specified torque creates the correct axial clamping force on the bearing. Many designs require a new hub nut on each installation. After bearing replacement on a driven axle, check the torque of the CV axle nut.
