Weatherstripping is the continuous rubber, foam, or EPDM sealing material around all vehicle openings — doors, boot lid, bonnet, windows, and sunroof — that prevents water, wind, road noise, and outside air from entering the cabin when the panels are closed. It forms a compressible barrier that deforms under the closing force of the panel, conforming to minor surface irregularities and providing an effective seal at all closure edges. Door weatherstripping typically consists of a hollow rubber tube (lip seal) bonded to a carrier strip that clips or bonds to the door frame or body aperture. Window run channels guide and seal the glass as it moves up and down. Good weatherstripping is the primary defence against water ingress that causes interior dampness, electrical issues, and structural rust of the body structure below the floor.
When a door is closed, the weatherstripping compresses between the door edge and the body aperture, forming a continuous seal around the entire door perimeter. The rubber's memory (its ability to recover to original shape after compression) maintains sealing force throughout the door's service life. The seal must accommodate the variable gap between door and aperture at different points around the perimeter, which changes with body flex, panel adjustments, and ageing of the hinges. Door-to-body gaps are engineered to be consistent around the perimeter when adjusted correctly, but these gaps change over the vehicle's life. Window run channels must guide the glass precisely into its closed position while providing a sliding seal that does not scratch the glass and seals against rain at all glass positions. Sunroof seals combine compressible lip seals with drainage channels that route water that passes the primary seal to drains that exit below the vehicle.
Hardening and loss of sealing: EPDM rubber hardens with age and UV exposure, losing its ability to compress and recover. Hardened weatherstripping no longer seals effectively, allowing wind noise, water ingress, and increased road noise. The door requires more closing force as the seal resistance disappears.
Tearing and detachment: Weatherstripping tears at the corners and high-wear points (particularly at the lower corners of door apertures where water pools), or detaches from its carrier when the adhesive or retention clips fail. A section hanging free allows continuous water and air entry at that point.
Sticky weatherstripping: Some rubber formulations become tacky with age and heat, causing the weatherstripping to bond to the door panel on a hot day. Opening the door tears the seal. Silicone spray lubricant prevents this but should be reapplied regularly.
Level 1 — Regular Lubrication and Inspection: Apply a silicone-based spray lubricant or rubber conditioner to all door and window weatherstripping twice yearly — before summer (to prevent sticking on hot days) and before winter (to prevent freezing to door panels in cold conditions). Inspect all seals for tearing, lifting, or hardened sections. Run a finger along the seal surface — it should feel smooth and pliable, not hard and brittle.
Level 2 — Water Ingress Investigation: If the interior becomes damp, identify the ingress point before replacing seals. Damp footwells are often caused by clogged sunroof drains or failed door membrane vapour barriers rather than weatherstripping. Spray a water stream along the door and window seal perimeter while an assistant inside monitors for ingress — this pinpoints the failing section.
Level 3 — Weatherstripping Replacement: Replace weatherstripping sections that are torn, perforated, or have lost their cross-section due to permanent compression. Universal weatherstripping kits are available for many vehicles; OEM-specification replacement provides the best fit and durability. Ensure all retention clips are engaged and the new seal sits correctly in its channel before closing the door.
