What it is

Tyre tread is the patterned outer rubber surface that contacts the road, engineered to channel water away from the contact patch, generate grip through tread block edges, and provide drainage channels preventing aquaplaning at speed. Modern passenger tyre tread depth starts at 7–8mm new and contains legally mandated wear indicators — small rubber bars moulded at 1.6mm height across the base of the main circumferential grooves. When the tread surface wears flush with these indicators, the tyre has reached its legal minimum. Most performance and safety organisations recommend replacement at 3mm, where wet-weather braking distances are still significantly longer than at 7mm but considerably shorter than at 1.6mm. The tread pattern geometry — the arrangement of blocks, grooves, sipes (fine slits), and channels — is specific to the tyre's intended use: asymmetric patterns separate dry grip (outer shoulder) from water evacuation (inner channels); directional patterns optimise water displacement in one rotation direction; symmetric patterns offer versatility in all conditions.

What it does

Tread depth and pattern perform one irreplaceable function: preventing aquaplaning by creating escape routes for water between the tyre and road. At 80 km/h, a tyre must displace approximately 8 litres of water per second to maintain road contact. The circumferential grooves channel water toward the rear; cross-grooves divert it laterally; sipes create additional drainage edges. When tread depth falls, groove volume decreases and the tyre's drainage capacity is reduced — at 1.6mm in heavy rain, aquaplaning can begin at speeds as low as 65–70 km/h compared to over 100 km/h on a new tyre. Tread block edges also contribute to dry grip through mechanical interlocking with road surface micro-texture — worn tyres with rounded, smooth blocks lose edge bite and generate less lateral force for a given slip angle, extending stopping distances on dry roads as well as wet.

What goes wrong

Wear indicators flush with tread surface: Tyre has reached the legal minimum of 1.6mm. Wet braking distances at this depth are approximately 25–30% longer than at 3mm. Replace immediately — continuing to use tyres at legal minimum in wet conditions is a serious safety risk, not merely a compliance issue.

One-sided or shoulder wear: Inner shoulder wear indicates negative camber beyond specification or toe-out. Outer shoulder wear indicates positive camber. Both shoulders wearing with a raised centre band indicates the tyre has been chronically over-inflated. These patterns indicate the tyre is wearing faster than it should — the underlying alignment fault will consume a replacement tyre at the same abnormal rate if not corrected.

Diagonal wear patches or flat spots: Repeated hard braking with non-ABS brakes producing flat spots, or irregular wear from wheel imbalance or worn shock absorbers allowing the tyre to bounce and skip contact. Shock absorbers that have lost damping force allow the tyre to bounce rhythmically, wearing a series of diagonal flat patches around the circumference.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Owner check: Use the 20p / 2-euro coin test monthly — insert the coin into the main tread groove with the outer rim facing inward; if the rim is visible above the tread surface, depth is below 3mm and replacement is due. Check tread depth in the centre and both edges of each tyre — edge wear not visible from the tread surface requires checking from the side of the tyre. Look for any flat spots or diagonal wear patches by rolling the vehicle slowly forward and watching the tread contact pattern.

Level 2 — Detection: Measure tread depth accurately with a depth gauge at a minimum of three points across the tread width and at four circumferential positions per tyre. Record and compare measurements between consecutive checks — rapid wear (losing more than 1mm per 5,000 km) indicates alignment, inflation, or suspension issues beyond normal tyre degradation. If wear rate has increased suddenly, check inflation pressure and inspect suspension components before purchasing replacement tyres.

Level 3 — Professional service: When fitting replacement tyres, request a four-wheel alignment check simultaneously — a freshly aligned vehicle extends the replacement tyre's service life by 20–30% compared to fitting new tyres on a misaligned vehicle. Ask the tyre technician to identify the specific wear pattern on the removed tyres — the pattern is a diagnostic record of suspension and alignment history.
