What it is

Tyre rotation is the periodic repositioning of tyres between wheel positions on the vehicle — moving front tyres to the rear and rear to the front, with a side change where the rotation pattern allows — to equalise the wear rate across all four tyres. Front tyres on front-wheel-drive vehicles wear 30–50% faster than rear tyres because they simultaneously handle steering, acceleration, and a greater share of braking force. Without rotation, the front tyres would need replacement while the rear tyres still have substantial remaining tread — at considerable additional cost compared to replacing all four simultaneously after equalised wear. The most common rotation patterns are: straight rotation (front-to-rear same side, rear-to-front same side — for directional tyres that cannot be crossed); cross rotation (front-to-rear opposite side, rear-to-front opposite side — for non-directional symmetrical tyres); and five-tyre rotation incorporating the full-size spare. Staggered fitments (different size front and rear) cannot be rotated between axles.

What it does

Rotation extends total tyre set lifespan by 20–40% by preventing the accelerated wear of heavily loaded positions from consuming tyres prematurely. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, the front tyres experience compound loads that rear tyres do not: the steering and cornering side forces generated during turning are highest at the front contact patch; tractive forces from the driven wheels are transmitted through the front tyres; and nose-dive weight transfer under braking shifts additional load to the front axle. Moving tyres regularly between positions distributes this compound wear load across the entire set. Additionally, rotation provides a regular opportunity to inspect all four tyres simultaneously for uneven wear patterns, sidewall damage, and emerging issues that may not be visible during routine walkaround checks.

What goes wrong

Front tyres wearing significantly faster than rears: Normal on front-wheel-drive vehicles but indicates rotation has been neglected. The front tyres are carrying all the drivetrain and steering load without the wear distribution that rotation provides. At this stage, the front tyres will need replacement before the rears — an economically inefficient outcome that rotation prevents.

Rear tyres develop unusual wear pattern after being moved to the front: Wear pattern inherited from the rear position is now visible from the front. This is normal and expected — the new front position will now wear the tread differently going forward. The pre-existing wear pattern does not affect safety if the tread depth remains adequate.

Vibration or noise developing shortly after rotation: A tyre with irregular wear (from a previous imbalance or alignment issue) placed in a new position where its irregular wear pattern resonates differently. Wheel balance should be confirmed after rotation — imbalance that was tolerable in one position may vibrate in another.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Owner check: Check tyre tread depth at all four corners at every rotation — rotation provides a natural inspection opportunity that otherwise requires the vehicle to be raised. Photograph the tread wear pattern on each tyre before rotation; comparing photos between rotations reveals the wear rate and pattern at each position over time.

Level 2 — Detection: Rotate tyres every 10,000–12,000 km or every second oil change, whichever comes first. Confirm the correct rotation pattern for the tyre type: directional tyres (marked with a rotation arrow on the sidewall) can only move front-to-rear on the same side; non-directional asymmetric tyres can be crossed but must maintain their inside/outside orientation. Check tyre pressure after rotation — moving tyres between axle positions changes the load requirement and the correct pressure for each position.

Level 3 — Professional service: At every rotation, request a four-wheel alignment check if any uneven wear pattern has been observed. A wheel alignment that is within acceptable tolerance for straight-line driving may still be causing edge wear on the tyres — measuring at rotation intervals catches this before it shortens tyre life significantly.
