What it is

The transmission rear seal (also called the extension housing seal or tailshaft seal) is the lip seal at the rearmost point of the transmission where the output shaft exits toward the driveshaft on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. This seal is one of the most common sources of transmission fluid leaks due to its exposure to heat, contamination, and the angular loads imposed by the driveshaft yoke. The driveshaft companion yoke fits over the output shaft and rotates inside the seal; over time, the yoke creates a wear groove on its sealing surface causing new seals to leak immediately after installation.

What it does

The rear seal retains transmission fluid within the extension housing while allowing the output shaft and companion yoke to rotate at driveshaft speed. Because the output shaft connects directly to the driveshaft without a flexible CV joint, the yoke experiences direct angular loads as the driveshaft angle changes with suspension movement. The seal must maintain an effective seal despite these small but continuous angular deflections. A secondary outer lip repels road dirt and moisture from entering along the shaft. The seal's spring-loaded main lip must be lubricated by a thin film of transmission fluid without allowing bulk fluid escape.

What goes wrong

Companion yoke wear groove: The most common reason rear seals fail repeatedly after replacement. The yoke develops an annular wear groove exactly at the seal contact line. New seals installed on grooved yokes leak immediately. Cure: replace the yoke, or install a repair sleeve (wear sleeve) over the worn surface.

Seal lip hardening: Degraded transmission fluid or the wrong fluid specification causes the rubber seal compound to harden, losing flexibility and sealing ability at low temperatures.

Extension housing bushing wear: The bushing supporting the output shaft wears, allowing shaft runout that destroys seals rapidly. Replace the bushing whenever replacing the seal if runout exceeds specification.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Leak Identification: A transmission rear seal leak appears as a fluid drip or wet area immediately around the driveshaft yoke at the back of the transmission. Before ordering a replacement seal, inspect the yoke sealing surface for a visible wear groove.

Level 2 — Yoke Assessment: Slide a fingernail across the yoke sealing surface — if you can feel the groove, a new seal alone will fail within a few thousand kilometres. Order a repair sleeve kit or plan yoke replacement. Check extension housing bushing play by attempting to move the output shaft laterally — any movement indicates bushing replacement is needed.

Level 3 — Professional Replacement: Driveshaft removal is required for rear seal replacement. Mark driveshaft phasing before removal to ensure correct reinstallation. After seal replacement, verify transmission fluid level is correct and check for leaks during the first test drive.
