The transmission pan gasket seals the joint between the sump pan and the transmission case, preventing automatic transmission fluid from leaking around the pan perimeter. Pan gaskets are available in three types: traditional rubber gaskets (most common for older transmissions), re-usable multi-layer steel (MLS) gaskets on some newer applications, and RTV silicone sealant used on transmissions that originally specified it. The gasket must seal effectively across the entire pan flange despite temperature cycling from -30°C to over 150°C, and the slight warping that occurs in thin steel pan flanges over time.
The transmission pan gasket compresses evenly between the pan flange and the transmission case when the pan bolts are torqued, creating a fluid-tight seal across the entire pan perimeter. The gasket material must resist compression set (the tendency of compressed rubber to permanently deform over time), chemical attack from ATF and its additives, and thermal cycling without cracking or extruding. The correct bolt torque is critical — overtightening causes pan flange distortion that concentrates load unevenly causing leaks; undertightening leaves insufficient compression for a reliable seal. On transmissions specifying RTV sealant, a continuous fresh bead must be applied correctly at the time of service.
Compression set and leakage: Old rubber gaskets harden and lose their spring-back, allowing ATF to seep between compression ridges. Most visible at pan corners and midpoints between bolts where unsupported spans allow the gasket to relax.
Pan flange distortion: Overtightened pan bolts permanently distort the thin metal pan flange. New gaskets cannot achieve even compression on a distorted flange — the pan must be carefully straightened or replaced.
Wrong gasket type: Fitting a solid gasket to a transmission specifying RTV, or using RTV on a transmission designed for a solid gasket, results in inadequate sealing from day one.
Level 1 — Leak Identification: Seepage around the pan perimeter stains the pan exterior brown or black with dried ATF. Unlike a drain plug leak (single point), a gasket leak creates a band of residue along part or all of the pan edge. Never retighten pan bolts on a suspected gasket leak without checking flange condition first.
Level 2 — Replacement Procedure: Always replace the gasket at every transmission service — never reuse. Clean both mating surfaces completely, including the pan flange. Torque bolts in a diagonal sequence to specification working from the centre outward. Allow 24 hours for RTV gaskets to cure before filling with fluid.
Level 3 — Flange Assessment: Lay a straight edge across the pan flange before installing a new gasket. If the flange shows more than 0.3mm variation in flatness, work around it with a rubber mallet to restore flatness, or replace the pan. A distorted flange ensures the new gasket will leak again.
