What it is

The transmission pan (sump pan) is a pressed steel or aluminium cover bolted to the underside of the automatic transmission case, forming the lower section of the oil sump. The pan stores approximately 30–50% of total transmission fluid volume when at rest, with the remainder distributed throughout clutch packs, valve body passages, the torque converter, and cooler lines. The bottom of the pan typically contains a powerful magnet that captures ferrous metal particles from gear and clutch wear — inspecting these particles during a fluid service provides valuable information about internal wear rates and overall transmission health.

What it does

The transmission pan provides sealed fluid storage for the lower section of the automatic transmission, ensuring the fluid pickup tube is always submerged regardless of thermal expansion and contraction. The pan's volume acts as a thermal reservoir helping maintain fluid temperature stability. The magnetic drain plug or internal magnet captures metallic wear particles before they can circulate through the valve body and damage solenoid orifices and hydraulic passages. During service, removing the pan provides direct access to the transmission filter for replacement and allows visual inspection of the valve body and accumulator ports visible from below.

What goes wrong

Gasket leaks: The most common issue — the gasket between pan and transmission case deteriorates with heat cycling, allowing fluid seepage around the pan perimeter. Most visible at pan corners and midpoints between bolts.

Pan damage: The pan hangs low and is vulnerable to impact from road debris, speed humps, and bottoming out. Dents can distort the sealing surface; deeper impacts crack the pan requiring replacement.

Warped pan flange: Overtightening pan bolts distorts the thin metal flange, preventing correct gasket compression and causing persistent leaks even after gasket replacement.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Leak Monitoring: Check for fluid seepage around the pan perimeter and drain plug monthly. A light film on the exterior or a fresh stain directly below the transmission indicates a pan gasket leak. Do not ignore — even slow leaks deplete transmission fluid, leading to slipping and overheating.

Level 2 — Service Procedure: During transmission fluid service, remove the pan carefully — it contains residual fluid. Inspect the drain magnet for metallic debris: a thin grey metallic sheen is normal; larger particles or fibrous material indicates significant wear. Clean the pan thoroughly, replace the gasket, install the new filter, and reattach with bolts torqued in a cross pattern to specification. Never overtighten pan bolts.

Level 3 — Pan Inspection: If the pan shows dents contacting the filter or valve body, replacement is required before fluid circulation is compromised. Consider upgrading to a deep pan for additional fluid capacity and better temperature management on towing applications.
