What it is

The transmission mount (gearbox mount) is a rubber-bonded metal bracket supporting the rear of the transmission on the vehicle's chassis. It isolates the body from vibrations and torque reactions produced by the powertrain during operation. Most vehicles use a single transmission mount at the rear of the gearbox, working with engine mounts to control powertrain movement. The rubber element absorbs vibration vertically, longitudinally during acceleration and braking torque reactions, and laterally during cornering. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the mount also controls pinion angle — worn mounts shift driveshaft angle geometry causing vibration that worsens with speed.

What it does

Transmissions produce significant reaction torque during acceleration and deceleration — the tendency of the housing to rotate opposite to its output shaft. Without mounts, this reaction would stress the engine, transmission, and exhaust system violently during every acceleration event. The transmission mount resists this reaction torque while its rubber construction absorbs high-frequency vibrations from gears and bearings, preventing them from transmitting into the body where they would be perceived as harshness and noise. The mount must maintain correct powertrain geometry keeping the transmission aligned with the engine and driveshaft, while providing enough compliance to allow controlled movement during torque application.

What goes wrong

Rubber deterioration: The rubber degrades from heat, oil contamination, and age, eventually cracking and separating. Deteriorated rubber allows excessive powertrain movement throughout the drivetrain.

Metal-to-metal collapse: When rubber separates completely, metal brackets contact directly, transmitting severe vibration and clunking noise through the vehicle body.

Driveshaft angle misalignment: On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, collapsed mounts shift the transmission rearward and downward, changing universal joint angles and causing driveshaft vibration that worsens with vehicle speed.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Monitoring: Common symptoms: clunking when engaging Drive from neutral, harshness during acceleration or braking, vibration through the gear lever at certain speeds, and visible powertrain movement when accelerating while observed from outside. Inspect visually during oil changes — look for rubber cracking, separation, or sagging.

Level 2 — Replacement: Support the transmission with a jack, remove mount fasteners, install new mount, torque to specification. Always replace engine and transmission mounts as a set when one fails — they wear at similar rates and a new mount on one end stresses the remaining old mount disproportionately.

Level 3 — Alignment Check: After transmission mount replacement on rear-wheel-drive vehicles, have driveshaft angles inspected — the new mount may restore powertrain height, requiring driveshaft vibration re-evaluation.
