What it is

The trailing arm is a rear suspension link that connects the rear axle carrier or wheel knuckle to the vehicle body or subframe, allowing the rear wheel to move vertically over bumps while controlling its fore-aft position and maintaining wheel alignment under braking and acceleration loads. The arm trails rearward from its chassis pivot point to the wheel — hence the name. Rubber bushings at both ends of the arm isolate vibration and allow controlled movement. Trailing arm designs vary: simple trailing arms (single pivot, allowing only vertical movement) are used in twist-beam rear axles common on economy vehicles; multi-link rear suspensions use shorter lateral and longitudinal arms instead. The trailing arm’s rigidity determines the rear wheel’s fore-aft stability under acceleration and braking forces.

What it does

The trailing arm controls the rear wheel’s position in the fore-aft direction — preventing the rear axle from moving rearward under acceleration or forward under braking. Without structural trailing arm control, braking forces would push the rear wheels forward relative to the body, changing the wheelbase and toe angle dynamically in an unpredictable way. On twist-beam designs, the trailing arms are the primary structural element of the entire rear axle — they connect the twist beam to the vehicle body and carry all suspension and braking loads into the body structure. The bushing compliance at each end provides the controlled flexibility required for ride quality while maintaining alignment accuracy under load.

What goes wrong

Thudding or clunking noise from the rear during acceleration, braking, or over bumps: The trailing arm’s chassis pivot bushing has deteriorated, allowing excessive arm movement and impact at the bushing limits. The noise is characteristically dull and directional — from the rear corner of the vehicle — and varies with vehicle load and road surface. Confirm by inspection with the vehicle raised and the suspension unloaded.

Rear wheel camber or toe outside alignment specification without suspension damage: Trailing arm bushings worn severely enough to allow the arm to shift position under load change the rear wheel’s alignment dynamically. Static alignment may appear acceptable but handling becomes unpredictable as the rear geometry shifts under braking or cornering loads. Replacing the bushings restores consistent rear alignment.

Rear appears lifted higher on one side than the other: A trailing arm that has been bent from a collision or severe road impact changes the ride height on the affected corner. Bent trailing arms cannot be straightened reliably — replacement is required.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Owner check: Listen for thumping or knocking from the rear of the vehicle specifically during load transitions — accelerating, braking, or entering driveways at an angle. A rear corner that sits visibly lower than the other after a road impact indicates possible trailing arm damage requiring immediate inspection.

Level 2 — Detection: With the vehicle raised and suspension unloaded, inspect trailing arm bushings for cracking, extrusion of rubber beyond the bushing sleeve, or visible gap between the rubber and metal housing. Grasp the trailing arm and push fore-aft to detect excessive play in the pivot bushings. Confirm rear alignment is within specification — rear toe and camber errors that track back to the trailing arm position indicate bushing deterioration.

Level 3 — Professional service: Trailing arm bushing replacement on many vehicles requires pressing out the old bushing and pressing in the new one with specialist tooling. On some designs, the entire trailing arm is more cost-effective to replace as an assembly than to re-bush individually. A four-wheel alignment is mandatory after any trailing arm or bushing work — the rear alignment angles are directly controlled by the arm’s position.
