The highest-stakes interval on the schedule — a modest belt standing between your engine and a rebuild.
The timing belt is a toothed, fibre-reinforced rubber belt that keeps the engine's two rotating halves — crankshaft below, camshaft above — locked in perfect synchronisation. Its teeth mesh with pulleys on both shafts so the valves always move in exact step with the pistons, cycle after cycle, thousands of times a minute. Unlike a chain, a belt runs quietly and needs no oil supply — but it is a consumable with a hard expiry, set in kilometres and in years, because rubber ages even when the car sits still. On most modern engines — built as interference designs — that expiry date carries unusual weight: the belt is the only thing preventing pistons and valves from occupying the same space. It is the least glamorous part on this page and the one with the most expensive consequences.
The timing belt is the engine's choreography. It links the crankshaft to the camshaft at an exact 2:1 ratio, so every valve opens and closes at precisely the right moment relative to each piston's position — timing measured in fractions of a degree, held for tens of thousands of kilometres. On many engines the same belt also drives the water pump. The stakes depend on the engine's architecture: on an interference engine, pistons and open valves share the same space at different moments, and only correct timing keeps them apart — a snapped belt means immediate contact, bent valves, and often a destroyed head. On a non-interference engine a failure just stops the car. Most modern engines are interference — which is what turns a routine rubber part into the highest-stakes line on the maintenance schedule.
Age and mileage degradation: Rubber hardens and micro-cracks with heat cycles whether the car is driven or parked — which is why the interval is years as well as kilometres. Cracked ribs, frayed edges, or a glazed, shiny back face all signal a belt near the end of its life, but a belt can also look perfect and fail without warning. Appearance clears nothing; only the interval counts.
Tensioner and idler failure: The belt rarely fails alone. A seized idler bearing or a tired tensioner lets the belt run loose, jump teeth, or shred — same outcome as a snapped belt. This is why the belt is always replaced as a kit, never as a lone part.
Oil contamination: A weeping crankshaft or camshaft seal soaks the belt in oil, which attacks the rubber and can halve its life. Oil on or near the belt means the seals get replaced with it — fitting a new belt into an oily housing is paying twice.
Water pump seizure: On many engines the belt drives the water pump. A pump that seizes takes the belt with it instantly — the reason most kits include the pump even when it still turns freely.
Two facts every owner should hold: is the engine interference or not, and when is the belt due — in kilometres and years, whichever lands first. Buying a used car? A timing belt with no replacement receipt is a belt that has never been changed. Price the job into the purchase.
If the cover permits a glance at a service, look for cracked ribs, frayed edges, glazing, or any trace of oil. But treat inspection as a way to catch early failure — never as a reason to stretch the interval. Rubber ages internally where no eye reaches; replace on schedule even if the belt looks new.
This is a workshop job: crank and cam must be locked at exact reference marks, and a single tooth of misalignment means poor running — or contact. The belt goes in as a kit — tensioner, idlers, and the water pump if belt-driven — because the labour is the cost, and reusing old rotating parts inside a fresh belt run is false economy. With the cover off, a mechanic reads the belt run in four moves: the belt itself — rib cracking, edge fray, glazing, and tooth profile still sharp; the tensioner — correct spring pressure and no play at the pivot; the idlers and pump — spun by hand for roughness or noise, plus a look at the pump's weep hole; and the seals — any oil sheen at the crank or cam ends of the run, which condemns the seals alongside the belt. Above all: the record beats the eye. A good mechanic asks when it was last done before judging how it looks.
