What it is

Tail lights and brake lights are the rear-facing lighting assemblies that communicate vehicle presence, speed changes, and braking intent to following drivers. Tail lights are the low-intensity red lights that illuminate whenever the headlights or parking lights are on, marking the vehicle’s rear at night and in low-visibility conditions. Brake lights are the high-intensity red lights that activate immediately when the brake pedal is pressed, alerting following drivers to deceleration. Modern vehicles have three brake light points: left, right, and a high-mounted centre brake light (HMSL) above the rear window that is positioned at eye level for the driver of a following vehicle, reducing reaction time and rear-end collision rates. Tail lights and brake lights typically share the same physical lens and housing but use separate bulbs or separate sections of a multi-function LED array — the brake function operates independently of the tail function so that braking is clearly distinguishable from parking light activation. LED tail and brake light systems offer faster illumination times (they reach full brightness in approximately 0.2 ms vs 200 ms for incandescent bulbs), significantly longer service life, and lower power consumption than traditional bulb designs.

What it does

Tail lights establish the vehicle’s rear presence for following drivers under low-visibility conditions, providing a reference point for following distance judgement and lane tracking. Brake lights deliver a fast, unambiguous signal of vehicle deceleration — the 0.2 ms activation time of LED brake lights compared to 200 ms for incandescent bulbs provides following drivers approximately 6 metres of additional stopping distance at 100 km/h. The high-mounted stop light is legislatively mandated across major markets because its elevated position is directly visible to following drivers over the intervening vehicle at normal following distances, unlike low-mounted brake lights that may be obscured by the vehicle’s boot or trailer tow bar. The brake light circuit activates via the brake light switch at the pedal assembly — the same switch that also signals the ABS module, transmission interlock, and cruise control cancellation. A failed brake light is both a legal violation and a significant safety risk; following drivers have no advance warning of braking from the vehicle ahead.

What goes wrong

Failed bulb or LED section: Most common failure. Incandescent bulbs fail suddenly; LED sections may show partial failure (some diodes out) before complete failure. Inspect all three brake light points simultaneously — many drivers discover a failed brake light only when another driver signals them or during a roadworthy inspection. Replace bulbs in pairs on the same axle of the lighting assembly to maintain balanced intensity.

Brake lights stuck on: Caused by a failed brake light switch that is stuck in the activated position, or a switch that is incorrectly adjusted so the plunger is not fully compressed at pedal rest. Continuous brake light illumination drains the battery when parked, confuses following drivers, and may disable cruise control permanently. Check and adjust the brake light switch before replacing the assembly.

Water ingress into the lens assembly: A cracked lens or deteriorated seal allows water to enter, causing condensation on the inner lens surface and accelerating bulb failure from moisture. Water contact with electrical connectors causes corrosion that produces intermittent failure and false readings. Seal cracks with automotive lens adhesive or replace the assembly.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Monthly Light Check: Have a second person confirm brake light activation at all three points while you press the brake pedal. Alternatively, check the reflection in a wall or garage door. A brake light out is a legal violation in all markets and requires same-day replacement. Check tail lights are functioning whenever you activate headlights at dusk. Inspect lenses for cracks, yellowing, or moisture condensation.

Level 2 — Bulb Replacement: Replace incandescent bulbs in axle pairs for consistent intensity. Use only bulbs of the exact specification — wattage and base type — stated in the owner’s manual. Avoid touching halogen bulb glass with bare hands — skin oil creates hot spots that cause premature failure. On vehicles with LED assemblies, individual LED replacement is often not available — the complete assembly must be replaced when an LED section fails.

Level 3 — Professional Assembly Replacement: Replacement of a complete tail and brake light assembly requires removal of the assembly mounting bolts from inside the boot, disconnection of the multi-pin connector, and careful alignment of the replacement to avoid water ingress at the body seal. On some modern vehicles, the replacement assembly must be coded to the vehicle’s body control module before the dynamic brake light (hazard flash during emergency braking) function operates correctly.
