The steering rack boot (also called the rack gaiter or bellows boot) is a pleated rubber or thermoplastic sleeve that seals the outer end of the steering rack housing where the inner tie rod exits through the rack. The boot prevents road contamination — water, mud, grit, and salt — from entering the rack housing at the inner tie rod joint, where the precision rack-and-pinion gear teeth and the inner tie rod ball joint are lubricated by the factory-filled grease or hydraulic fluid. A pair of boots protects each end of the rack — one boot per inner tie rod. The pleated design allows the boot to compress and extend as the inner tie rod moves through its range of motion during steering, without tearing or buckling.
The steering rack boot is the only barrier between the rack’s internal precision components and the external environment. Inside the rack housing, the rack gear teeth, pinion gear, and inner tie rod ball joint are lubricated with grease (on manual racks) or hydraulic fluid (on hydraulic power steering racks) — contamination of this lubrication with water or abrasive grit causes rapid wear of hardened steel precision surfaces. A failed boot that allows water ingress leads to rack corrosion and inner tie rod wear that would not have occurred on a clean, sealed rack. Early boot replacement (a low-cost repair) prevents inner tie rod and rack replacement (a high-cost repair).
Torn, split, or cracked rubber boot visible from underneath the vehicle: The boot has failed from age, ozone degradation, or impact from road debris. A torn boot requires replacement immediately — every kilometre driven with an open boot allows contamination into the rack. The grease ejected through a torn boot often appears as black grease deposits around the inner tie rod area.
Black grease around the inner tie rod area: Grease has been ejected through a torn boot under the pumping action of the rack movement. This confirms the boot has been open for some time and the rack lubrication has been partially depleted. Replace the boot and repack the grease simultaneously.
Clicking or roughness from the inner tie rod after boot failure: Water and grit have entered the inner tie rod ball joint through the failed boot and caused wear or corrosion. If the inner tie rod shows play or roughness after boot failure, replacing the boot alone is insufficient — the inner tie rod must also be replaced.
Level 1 — Owner check: Inspect the steering rack boots from underneath the vehicle at every oil change — they are visible as pleated rubber sleeves at each end of the steering rack. Any boot that is split, torn, collapsed, or has grease deposits around it requires immediate replacement. Also check that the boot’s securing clips are in place at both ends of the boot.
Level 2 — Detection: Boots that appear intact but feel hard or brittle when squeezed are close to failure from rubber ageing — replace proactively before they split on a bump or in cold weather. Inspect inner clips for corrosion that may have allowed the boot to slip off the rack housing without obvious tearing.
Level 3 — Professional service: Boot replacement requires disconnecting the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle, removing the inner tie rod from the rack, fitting the new boot with fresh grease, and reassembling. The inner tie rod’s condition should be assessed during this operation — replacement adds little additional labour if the rack is already disassembled. A wheel alignment is required after any steering linkage disassembly and reassembly.
