What it is

The steering knuckle (also called the wheel knuckle, spindle, or upright) is the central structural component at each corner of the vehicle that connects the wheel hub and bearing, the suspension arms, and the steering linkage. It is a heavy cast steel or forged aluminium component with a central bore for the wheel hub bearing, bolt holes for the brake caliper and dust shield, a taper seat for the tie rod end, ball joint mounting holes for the control arms (or strut mount on MacPherson designs), and on front axles a steering arm that connects to the tie rod. The steering knuckle must withstand all braking, acceleration, and cornering loads from the wheel and transmit them to the suspension without deflecting.

What it does

The steering knuckle acts as the central junction between four separate systems: it receives the wheel's rotational load through the wheel bearing it houses, receives braking torque through the caliper bracket bolted to it, receives suspension loads through the ball joints and strut mounting points, and receives steering input through the tie rod end. For the steering to work correctly, the knuckle's geometry must be precisely as designed — the positions of the ball joint taper seat, tie rod taper seat, and bearing bore relative to each other determine the steering geometry (caster, camber, and toe angles) that the manufacturer has engineered. A bent or cracked knuckle changes this geometry in ways that cannot be corrected by alignment adjustment alone and that reduce both safety and handling precision.

What goes wrong

Impact damage and bending: Severe road impacts (potholes, kerb strikes, or collision damage) can bend the steering knuckle, causing permanent wheel camber and steering angle changes that cannot be corrected by alignment. A bent knuckle typically causes abnormal tyre wear that cannot be resolved despite repeated alignment attempts.

Bearing bore wear: After multiple wheel bearing replacements using press fit, the bearing bore can become oversized, preventing the new bearing from pressing in correctly. A loose-fitting bearing causes rapid re-failure of the new unit.

Ball joint taper seat wear: Repeated taper joint installations (ball joints, tie rod ends) gradually enlarge the taper seat, preventing the replacement joint stud from seating correctly and developing play immediately after installation.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Post-Impact Inspection: After any severe road impact, kerb strike, or minor collision, inspect the knuckle visually for visible bending, cracking, or distortion. Any vehicle that develops sudden wheel camber change, steering pull that resists alignment correction, or abnormal tyre wear after an impact requires knuckle inspection before additional alignment attempts.

Level 2 — Bearing Bore Measurement: When replacing wheel bearings, measure the bearing bore diameter before pressing in the new bearing. If the bore is worn beyond specification, knuckle replacement is required before the bearing replacement will hold. Never attempt to compensate for an oversized bore with adhesive or shims.

Level 3 — Replacement: Knuckle replacement requires complete disassembly of all components at that corner: brake assembly, hub and bearing, all suspension and steering joints. This is a full corner rebuild. After installation, a complete four-wheel alignment is mandatory and often requires several adjustment iterations to achieve correct geometry.
