This pre-tensioning ensures the occupant is in the correct position relative to the steering wheel and dashboard airbag at the moment the bag deploys — an occupant who has lunged forward before the bag fully inflates can be struck by the deploying bag with significant force rather than being cushioned by it. Pretensioners use a solid-propellant gas generator to drive a piston or rotary mechanism that pulls the belt tight in 15–20 milliseconds — faster than the human body can perceive. Load limiters integrated in the retractor mechanism subsequently allow controlled belt payout to prevent the belt itself from causing chest compression injury as the occupant decelerates against it.
The pretensioner optimises the occupant's position relative to the deploying airbag and removes the belt slack that accumulates from normal seating posture and clothing bulk. Research shows that seatbelt slack of 10–15cm allows the occupant to move significantly forward before belt force builds, increasing the risk of airbag-related injury and head contact with the steering wheel rim. By removing slack before the occupant moves, the pretensioner keeps the occupant in the ideal restraint position and reduces the forward excursion distance of the head and chest in a frontal collision. The load limiter component then allows the belt to pay out gradually as the occupant pushes against it, extending the deceleration time and reducing peak chest deceleration forces — preventing rib fractures and internal injuries from a belt that is too rigid.
SRS warning light following a collision: Pretensioners fire in any qualifying collision and are single-use — they cannot be reset. A pretensioner that has fired must be replaced. Visual confirmation of firing is often visible as a retracted or slightly deformed belt mechanism, but firing is confirmed by SRS fault codes even if external appearance is normal.
Seatbelt failing to retract fully after a collision or rough handling: The load limiter or retractor mechanism has been activated or damaged. The belt should be replaced even if the pretensioner has not fired — a belt that does not retract fully is no longer providing correct restraint geometry.
Clicking or unusual feel from the seatbelt mechanism: The retractor spring or pawl has debris or damage. On a pre-collision inspection, any seatbelt that does not retract smoothly, lock correctly on a sharp pull, or extend and retract freely should be replaced before relying on it for occupant protection.
Level 1 — Owner check: Test each seatbelt's function monthly — pull the belt sharply: it should lock. Extend the belt fully and release: it should retract smoothly. Any belt that does not retract, does not lock on a sharp pull, or has visible webbing damage (cuts, severe fraying, discolouration from chemicals) requires replacement. Clean belt webbing with mild soap and water — never with solvents that weaken the webbing fibres.
Level 2 — Detection: After any frontal or side collision where the vehicle was struck, have all seatbelts and pretensioners inspected by a specialist even if no airbags deployed — a collision below airbag deployment threshold may still have loaded the belt and pretensioner sufficiently to compromise their condition. SRS fault codes confirm whether any pretensioner has fired.
Level 3 — Professional service: Seatbelt and pretensioner replacement requires SRS circuit deactivation (battery off, system bleed-down) before any work on the buckle or retractor. Incorrect belt installation that alters the routing geometry or anchor point reduces the belt’s protective effectiveness — always follow the manufacturer’s procedure.
