The propeller shaft (prop shaft or driveshaft) transmits torque from the transmission output shaft to the rear differential on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. It must accommodate relative movement between the transmission (body-mounted) and the differential (suspended with the rear axle), using universal joints or CV joints at each end to allow angle changes as the suspension moves. Prop shafts are precision-balanced hollow steel tubes — even small imbalances create severe vibration at highway speeds because the shaft rotates 2–4 times faster than the wheels depending on the final drive ratio.
The prop shaft transmits full engine torque from the transmission to the differential under all driving conditions — from slow manoeuvring to high-speed highway cruising, and through the full suspension travel range. The universal joints at each end allow the shaft to operate at angles of up to 8–12° continuously. The shaft's hollow tube construction saves weight while maintaining sufficient torsional stiffness. The slip yoke at the transmission end allows the shaft to extend and retract slightly as the differential moves up and down with the suspension, accommodating suspension travel without binding.
U-joint wear: The most common failure. Bearing needle rollers wear under the combination of high rotational speed and cyclic angular loading. Symptoms progress from slight vibration to pronounced clunking before eventual complete failure.
Imbalance: Missing balance weights, bent tube from impact, or damaged slip yoke cause speed-proportional vibration felt through the entire vehicle. Always rebalance after any U-joint replacement or shaft removal.
Slip yoke corrosion: The slip yoke splines seize to the transmission output shaft from corrosion — particularly in regions with heavy road salt use. Creates clunking and binds prop shaft plunge movement.
Level 1 — Vibration and Noise Monitoring: Vibration increasing with vehicle speed (not engine speed) indicates prop shaft imbalance or U-joint wear. Clunking during acceleration and deceleration transitions suggests U-joint play. Vibration appearing after hitting a pothole often indicates a bent shaft or displaced balance weight.
Level 2 — U-Joint Inspection: With the vehicle safely raised, grasp the prop shaft and attempt rotation in both directions — any rotational play indicates U-joint wear. Check for rust on bearing caps. Greaseable U-joints should be lubricated with specified grease every 15,000–30,000 km. Confirm the slip yoke moves freely along the output shaft.
Level 3 — Balancing After Repair: Any prop shaft that has been removed or had U-joints replaced must be rebalanced on a specialist driveshaft balancing machine before installation. Reinstall with marks aligned to preserve factory balance orientation. Road test progressively to highway speed confirming vibration elimination.
