Identify the affected side by noting which swerve direction increases the noise.
ABS warning light combined with wheel bearing noise: The ABS tone ring is integral to the bearing seal on most modern hub units. A failing bearing with physical play changes the sensor gap, producing erratic ABS sensor signals and ABS warning lights. The ABS fault and the bearing noise are caused by the same component failure — replacing the hub unit resolves both simultaneously.
Wheel visible play when grasped and pushed laterally with the vehicle raised: Bearing internal clearance has exceeded its limit from wear, allowing the wheel to move laterally on the knuckle. Level 1 — Owner check: Listen for continuous speed-proportional humming that changes in intensity when the steering wheel is held slightly left or right — this is the most reliable symptom of a failing wheel bearing. At a safe location, grasp each tyre at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions with the vehicle raised and push and pull — any perceptible play confirms hub bearing failure requiring immediate replacement.
Level 2 — Detection: Spin each raised wheel by hand and listen for roughness, grinding, or irregular resistance during rotation — a failing bearing produces distinct irregular resistance compared to the smooth, quiet rotation of a healthy bearing. Confirm the affected corner by spinning each wheel independently.
Level 3 — Professional service: Hub assembly replacement requires wheel removal, brake caliper and rotor removal, and ABS sensor disconnection. Hub units are typically pressed or bolted to the knuckle — seized press-fit units require a hydraulic press. Brake rotor replacement is recommended simultaneously if the rotor is at or near its minimum thickness, as the labour overlap makes simultaneous replacement cost-effective. Wheel alignment should be confirmed after hub replacement if the knuckle was disturbed.
