Heater hoses are the flexible rubber coolant conduits that route hot coolant from the engine to the heater core inside the dashboard and return cooled coolant back to the engine or cooling system circuit. A typical vehicle has two heater hoses: the inlet hose carries hot coolant from the engine’s thermostat housing or cylinder head to the heater core inlet, and the outlet hose returns cooler coolant from the heater core back to the water pump inlet or the lower coolant circuit. Some vehicles incorporate a heater control valve in the inlet hose circuit that can restrict or stop coolant flow to the heater core when maximum cooling is required. Heater hoses are subject to the same degradation mechanisms as radiator hoses — heat aging, electrochemical degradation, pressure cycling, and coolant chemical attack — but they operate in a particularly demanding environment because they run through the hot engine bay and often contact or pass near heat sources such as the exhaust manifold. Heater hose failure causes coolant loss and loss of cabin heating simultaneously, and an internal collapse can restrict heater core flow without any visible external leak.
Heater hoses complete the heating circuit by providing the flexible connections between the engine’s coolant passages and the heater core, accommodating engine movement on its mounts while maintaining a sealed, pressurised coolant path. The inlet hose delivers the hottest available coolant — taken from near the engine thermostat outlet — directly to the heater core to maximise cabin heating capacity. The outlet hose returns this coolant, which has transferred some heat to the cabin air, back into the low-pressure side of the cooling circuit. This circuit operates at the same pressure as the main cooling system — typically 90–130 kPa — and at temperatures of 85–95°C. A failed heater hose causes immediate coolant loss at a relatively high flow rate because the heater circuit draws directly from the engine outlet. Even a small heater hose leak can drain the cooling system within minutes of engine start, leading to rapid overheating if not detected. Heater hoses that collapse internally from age restrict flow to the heater core, causing poor cabin heating despite normal coolant temperature and thermostat function.
Coolant leak from hose body or connections: The most common failure. Cracked or deteriorated hose walls or loose connections at the heater core pipes or engine fittings allow coolant to escape under system pressure. Heater hose leaks are often detected first by a sweet coolant smell in the engine bay rather than puddles under the vehicle, as coolant evaporates quickly from hot engine surfaces. Any unexplained drop in coolant level warrants inspection of all hose runs including the heater hoses at the firewall.
Collapsed heater hose — no cabin heat: Internal hose wall degradation causes the hose to collapse partially under the suction conditions at the water pump inlet, restricting heater core flow. The hose appears intact externally but the heater core inlet and outlet temperatures are the same (both cold), indicating no coolant flow through the core. Squeeze the hose when cold — a hose that cannot be squeezed or that stays collapsed when released has lost its structural integrity.
Hose deterioration at firewall penetration point: Where heater hoses pass through the firewall or contact metal edges, abrasion and heat concentration accelerate degradation. These points are often overlooked during routine inspection — inspect the full length of each hose including any firewall contact points.
Level 1 — Regular Inspection: Inspect heater hoses at every coolant level check. Squeeze each hose when cold — it should feel firm but slightly pliable. Check for surface cracks, swelling, or oil contamination. Look for coolant residue or staining at the heater core pipe connections at the firewall — these are common leak points as the hose end fittings age. Any sweet smell from the engine bay suggests a coolant leak from a heater hose, radiator hose, or heater core.
Level 2 — Replacement Every 5–8 Years: Replace heater hoses preventively at the same interval as radiator hoses — every 5–8 years or 100,000 km regardless of apparent condition. Replace both inlet and outlet hoses simultaneously. When replacing heater hoses, also inspect the heater control valve (if fitted) for correct operation — a stuck valve can restrict heater core flow independently of hose condition.
Level 3 — Professional Access to Firewall Connections: On some vehicles, the heater core pipe connections at the firewall are difficult to access without partial dashboard removal. If a firewall-end connection is leaking, confirm whether the connection is on the hose end (replaceable from the engine bay) or on the heater core pipe stub (requiring dashboard access). Have the connection inspected at a workshop before committing to a full dashboard disassembly for what may be a simple hose replacement.
