Gearbox oil seals are lip seals at various points on the transmission housing where rotating shafts exit the case — most commonly at the output shaft on rear-wheel-drive vehicles and input shaft. These seals prevent transmission fluid from leaking out along rotating shafts while allowing free rotation. The output shaft seal experiences significant stress from the weight and movement of the driveshaft or CV axle, making it more prone to wear. The sealing surface on the shaft must be smooth and within specified diameter tolerances — wear or damage to this surface causes immediate leakage even with a new seal installed.
Automatic and manual transmission fluids operate under varying pressure inside the case. At output points where shafts exit, the seal's spring-loaded lip maintains continuous contact with the shaft's sealing surface, forming a barrier against fluid escape while allowing shaft rotation. The seal accommodates minor shaft runout through its lip's flexibility. A secondary outer lip on many seals prevents road contamination from entering. Regular inspection and prompt replacement prevent transmission fluid loss and the expensive damage that follows low-fluid operation.
Seal lip wear: Normal operation gradually wears the sealing lip, reducing contact pressure. Oil film on the shaft or driveshaft yoke is the first sign; puddles under the vehicle follow progressively.
Shaft surface wear groove: After long service, the shaft develops a wear groove at the seal contact line. New seals installed on worn shafts leak immediately — the groove must be addressed with a repair sleeve or shaft replacement.
Companion flange wear: The driveshaft companion flange can wear its seating surface, causing excessive shaft runout that rapidly destroys new seals regardless of their quality.
Level 1 — Leak Monitoring: Inspect the underside of the transmission and around driveshaft connections monthly. Fluid dripping from the output shaft area confirms seal failure. Check fluid level immediately — even a slow leak depletes transmission fluid over time, leading to expensive damage.
Level 2 — Preventive Inspection: During scheduled transmission service, inspect all shaft seals for seepage. A wet surface that doesn't yet drip should be monitored and scheduled for replacement at the next service. Assess the shaft sealing surface condition before ordering a replacement seal.
Level 3 — Professional Replacement: Output shaft seal replacement typically requires driveshaft or CV axle removal. Measure shaft runout before installing a new seal — runout exceeding manufacturer specification requires shaft or companion flange replacement. Refill transmission to the correct level after seal replacement.
