Exhaust hangers are the rubber isolator mounts that support the weight of the exhaust system from the vehicle body while isolating exhaust vibration from the cabin structure. Each hanger consists of a rubber element with metal hooks or studs at each end — one end attaches to a hanger bracket welded to the exhaust pipe, the other to a mount point on the vehicle's underbody structure. The rubber element must simultaneously support the weight of the exhaust section (typically 2–8 kg per hanger), allow the exhaust to move slightly as the engine rocks and as the exhaust heats and expands, and absorb exhaust-frequency vibration before it reaches the body as noise. Most exhaust systems use 3–8 hangers at regular intervals along the exhaust routing.
The exhaust system operates at temperatures between ambient and approximately 700°C depending on location, and expands and contracts by several centimetres between cold and hot states. The rubber hangers must accommodate this expansion without restraining the pipe (which would create stress at the manifold joint) and without allowing the pipe to contact the body or floor pan. The rubber isolator's vibration damping function prevents the low-frequency combustion pulses and higher-frequency exhaust resonances from transmitting as buzzing, droning, or resonance into the cabin. When hangers fail, the exhaust drops and contacts the underbody, creating a grinding or scraping noise that is speed-dependent and often intermittent as the pipe contacts and releases against the body.
Rubber degradation and breakage: Exhaust hangers are exposed to under-vehicle heat, road splash, ozone, and constant vibration loading. The rubber element cracks and eventually tears through completely, allowing the exhaust section to sag. If the sag is large enough, the hot exhaust contacts fuel or brake lines, wiring, or the body floor — a potential fire and safety hazard. Partially cracked hangers allow increased vibration transmission into the body as a buzzing or droning noise.
Hanger stud or bracket corrosion: The metal stud or hook that anchors the hanger to the exhaust pipe bracket corrodes and breaks, causing the hanger to detach. Similarly, the underbody mount bracket corrodes away, leaving the hanger attached to the pipe with no body mounting point.
Level 1 — Annual Hanger Inspection: Inspect all exhaust hangers annually during a vehicle lift inspection. Rubber elements should be pliable — hardened, cracked, or partially torn hangers should be replaced proactively before complete failure. Check that all metal hooks and studs are intact and that the hanger locates the exhaust pipe clear of all underbody components.
Level 2 — Replacement Procedure: Exhaust hangers are one of the simplest undercarriage replacements. Lubricate the rubber with soapy water to ease installation on the metal hooks. Replace all hangers in the section being serviced when performing any exhaust work — individual hanger replacement is impractical when the exhaust is already lowered for other repairs.
Level 3 — Custom Hanger Fabrication: On older vehicles where replacement hangers are no longer available, universal hangers can be adapted or custom hangers fabricated from flat rubber strip and appropriate hardware. Ensure the replacement provides the same isolation and support geometry as the original to avoid introducing new vibration paths.
