Door hinges are the pivot assemblies that mount each door to the body A-pillar (front doors) or B-pillar (rear doors), allowing the door to swing open and close while supporting the door's full weight. Most vehicles use two hinges per door: one near the top and one near the bottom of the door's leading edge. Hinges must support the door weight (typically 15–40 kg per door) while allowing thousands of opening and closing cycles over the vehicle's life. The hinge pin or barrel rotates within a nylon, bronze, or steel bush. A door check (spring-loaded detent) is sometimes integrated into the hinge or is a separate component providing the door's open positions. Properly adjusted hinges maintain the door in its designed position with correct panel gaps and complete weatherstrip sealing compression.
The door hinge must carry the door's weight (a significant cantilever load at the hinge point), resist the lateral racking loads of slamming, and provide a smooth, controlled rotation through the full door swing range without binding or free play. The two-hinge arrangement on each door distributes the load: the upper hinge primarily resists the door's weight by carrying tension load on the leading face, while the lower hinge carries compression load. Together they resist the overturning moment of the door's weight trying to sag at its leading edge. Hinge geometry determines the door's sweep path — whether the door clears the sill, body aperture, and adjacent vehicle panels through its full opening range without contact. Hinge adjustability (slotted mounting holes) allows the door position to be adjusted within the aperture to achieve correct panel gaps after hinge replacement or after collision repair.
Worn hinge bushings: The hinge pin bush wears over years of use, allowing the pin to develop vertical and lateral play. A worn hinge produces a clunking or clicking noise when the door is opened or closed, and allows the door to sag at the leading edge — the door drops slightly as it opens and requires lifting to close correctly. Sagging doors fail to close correctly against the weatherstrip, causing wind noise and water ingress.
Corroded or seized hinges: Corrosion within the hinge mechanism causes the door to open with a squeaking or grinding noise and can eventually seize the door in one position. Regular lubrication prevents this on most vehicles.
Hinge pin failure: The hinge pin itself can corrode through or shear from repeated impact loads (doors catching wind and slamming), particularly on vehicles that park in exposed locations.
Level 1 — Regular Lubrication: Apply a spray lubricant (white lithium grease or silicone spray) to all door hinges twice yearly — open each door fully, spray into the hinge pin and barrel, and cycle the door several times to distribute the lubricant. Squeaking hinges are telling you they need lubrication immediately — metal-on-metal hinge wear accelerates rapidly without it.
Level 2 — Sag Assessment and Adjustment: If a door drops as it opens, inspect the hinge pin for play by holding the door at the leading edge and attempting to lift it vertically — any movement indicates worn bushings. Hinge bush replacement or hinge replacement restores correct door position. After any hinge replacement, adjust the door position in the aperture to achieve even panel gaps at all edges before tightening the mounting bolts.
Level 3 — Hinge Replacement: Door hinge replacement requires supporting the door's weight during the operation to prevent it dropping when the old hinge is removed. On welded hinges, the replacement is welded to the pillar — a bodyshop operation. On bolted hinges, replacement is straightforward but requires the assistant-door-support method to avoid straining the remaining hinge during installation of the new one.
