What it is

The car horn is an electrically activated audible warning device that produces a loud, attention-attracting sound to alert other road users and pedestrians to the vehicle's presence. All road vehicles are legally required to have a functioning horn that is audible from a specified distance (typically at least 90 dB at 2 metres in most jurisdictions). Modern vehicle horns are electromagnetic disc horns — a diaphragm is vibrated at high frequency by an electromagnet connected to the vehicle's battery through the horn relay. Most vehicles use two horns tuned to different frequencies (a high tone and a low tone) whose simultaneous operation produces a more penetrating, attention-getting sound than a single-tone horn. The horn button on the steering wheel or centre airbag assembly triggers the horn relay through a slip ring or clock spring contact, which connects the high-current horn circuit without routing the full horn current through the steering column. The clock spring (a coiled flat cable connecting the rotating steering wheel to the fixed wiring) must maintain continuity through the full steering lock range for the horn to function at all steering positions.

What it does

The horn provides an audible warning that can attract attention significantly faster and at greater distance than visual signals alone. Its legal requirement reflects its critical role in active safety — a horn that works in time-critical situations (a pedestrian stepping into the road, a vehicle merging without seeing the approaching vehicle) may prevent a collision in situations where braking alone is insufficient. The horn relay allows the steering wheel horn pad — which must remain within reach of a driver with their hands on the wheel — to switch a circuit drawing 5–10 amperes without routing high current through the clock spring or steering column wiring. The relay contact switches the horn's battery feed directly, with only the small coil current (200–400 milliamps) passing through the steering wheel circuit. The horn's frequency output (typically 390–520 Hz) is selected to maximise audibility and attention-getting response while meeting legal output limits. Dual-horn systems combining two frequencies produce a complex waveform that is more penetrating than single-frequency sounds at the same sound pressure level.

What goes wrong

Horn not operating: Check the horn fuse first, then the horn relay (swap with an identical relay to test). If fuse and relay are functional, test the horn directly by briefly applying 12V from the battery to the horn terminals with the relay bypassed — a functioning horn will sound. If the horn sounds with direct power but not when the button is pressed, the fault is in the clock spring, steering wheel contact, or horn switch. A failed clock spring also causes loss of steering wheel audio and cruise control buttons simultaneously.

Horn sounding continuously or intermittently without pressing: A stuck horn relay (contacts fused from arcing) or a short circuit in the horn switch circuit causes continuous horn activation. This is illegal and generates immediate driver and pedestrian alarm. Disconnect the horn fuse to stop the sound temporarily while the fault is diagnosed and corrected.

Weak or distorted horn sound: Corrosion on the horn diaphragm or adjustment screw, or a failed second horn on a dual-horn system, produces a thin or wavering sound. Most disc horns have an adjustment screw on the back that can be adjusted slightly to restore the correct resonance. Severely corroded or physically damaged horns should be replaced.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Monthly Function Test: Test the horn at every monthly vehicle inspection. A horn that does not operate requires diagnosis before the next trip — driving without a functioning horn is illegal in most jurisdictions. Note any change in horn tone quality — a weakening or distorted sound indicates developing corrosion or adjustment drift.

Level 2 — Annual Inspection: Inspect horn mounting brackets for corrosion and confirm secure attachment. The horn's mounting orientation affects drainage — horns should be mounted with the adjustment screw facing downward to allow water to drain rather than accumulate. Apply electrical contact spray to the horn terminal connections annually to prevent corrosion that increases circuit resistance and reduces horn output.

Level 3 — Clock Spring Diagnosis: If the horn, steering wheel audio controls, and cruise control switches all fail simultaneously, the clock spring (rotary electrical connector in the steering column) is the most likely common fault. Clock spring replacement requires steering wheel removal and airbag system disarming — the airbag squib circuit passes through the clock spring and must be handled with extreme caution. Never disassemble the steering wheel airbag area without fully disarming the SRS system first.
