What it is

The brake fluid reservoir is the semi-transparent plastic container mounted on top of the master cylinder that stores the brake system's hydraulic fluid supply. It feeds brake fluid to both hydraulic circuits through ports in the master cylinder cap mount, and is divided internally into two separate chambers — one for each hydraulic circuit — so that a leak in one circuit cannot drain the other. The reservoir cap incorporates a vented seal that allows pressure equalisation as fluid level changes with brake pad wear and thermal expansion, while preventing moisture and contamination from entering the fluid. A fluid level sensor float in the reservoir activates the brake warning light if the level drops below the minimum threshold. The reservoir is typically white or translucent to allow level checking without opening the cap.

What it does

As brake pads wear, the caliper pistons extend further outward to maintain pad contact with the thinner rotors, increasing the total fluid volume inside the caliper bores. This additional volume is drawn from the reservoir, gradually lowering the fluid level. Conversely, when the calipers are serviced and pistons are pushed back in to fit new pads, the displaced fluid returns to the reservoir, raising the level above its normal operating position. The reservoir's two-chamber design and the level sensor ensure the driver is alerted if a leak begins depleting one circuit before the second circuit is affected. The cap vent prevents vacuum or pressure buildup as fluid level changes during braking and thermal cycling, while the cap seal prevents atmospheric moisture from accelerating brake fluid degradation.

What goes wrong

Cracked or damaged reservoir: The translucent plastic cracks from age and solvent exposure, allowing fluid to leak and introducing contamination. A cracked reservoir requires immediate replacement to prevent brake system fluid loss.

Contaminated or clogged reservoir: Debris, rubber particles from aging seals, or water in the reservoir body contaminates the brake fluid supply and can clog the feed ports to the master cylinder, reducing hydraulic pressure.

Failed level sensor: The float-operated level sensor can corrode, stick, or fail, causing either a permanent brake warning light (with normal fluid level) or no warning despite low fluid level. Diagnose before assuming fluid level is the cause of a brake warning.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Monthly Level Check: Visually inspect the reservoir level against the MIN and MAX markings on the translucent body. Level should be between the marks. A level near MIN with new or recently inspected pads indicates a system leak requiring investigation. A level near MAX after pushing back caliper pistons for pad replacement is normal — do not remove fluid to lower the level, as this wastes good fluid; simply monitor after the new pads wear in slightly.

Level 2 — Cap Seal Inspection: Inspect the reservoir cap seal at each fluid change for hardening or cracking. A deteriorated seal allows moisture ingress, accelerating fluid degradation. Do not leave the reservoir cap off for extended periods during brake work — atmospheric moisture begins absorbing into the fluid immediately.

Level 3 — Reservoir Replacement: Replace the reservoir if cracked, discoloured from contamination, or if the cap seal cannot be replaced separately. On most vehicles the reservoir clips or bolts to the master cylinder — removal requires careful disconnection of the feed ports to avoid spilling fluid on painted surfaces. Brake fluid is an aggressive solvent that strips paint instantly; protect body panels with rags during any reservoir work.
