What it is

Brake bleed nipples (also called bleed screws or bleed valves) are small hollow threaded fittings installed in the highest point of each brake caliper and wheel cylinder that allow air and old fluid to be purged from the hydraulic brake circuit during fluid replacement or after any brake component repair requiring circuit opening. Each caliper or wheel cylinder has one bleed nipple — a hex-headed fitting with a small internal passage sealed by a tapered nose when tightened. A rubber dust cap covers the nipple to prevent external contamination. When the nipple is loosened slightly while brake pressure is applied (either by a second person operating the brake pedal, or by a pressure bleeder), fluid and any trapped air escape through the passage. When the nipple is tightened, the taper reseals the circuit. Bleed nipples are a critical maintenance access point — a seized or snapped bleed nipple makes circuit bleeding extremely difficult, requiring caliper or wheel cylinder replacement in severe cases. Prevention through regular cap removal and inspection, and application of penetrating oil before opening, prevents seizure.

What it does

Air in the hydraulic brake circuit is incompressible — any air bubble that enters the system compresses under pedal pressure instead of transmitting force to the calipers, causing spongy pedal feel and reduced braking effectiveness. Air typically enters the circuit through any repair procedure that opens the circuit (caliper replacement, brake line repair, master cylinder replacement), through micro-perforations in deteriorated rubber hoses, or when fluid level drops so low that air enters the master cylinder bore. The bleed nipple provides the only access point at each wheel for purging air upward and out of the circuit. Bleeding is performed at each wheel in sequence — starting at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (typically right rear), working toward the nearest (typically left front) — to ensure all air works progressively toward the nearest open exit. Fresh brake fluid simultaneously displaces the old, moisture-laden fluid from the circuit. Without functioning bleed nipples, this process is impossible and any air introduced during system repair cannot be removed.

What goes wrong

Seized bleed nipple: Corrosion between the nipple threads and the caliper or wheel cylinder body makes the nipple impossible to turn without risk of snapping. If the nipple snaps inside the caliper body, the caliper must typically be replaced as extracting the broken stud is rarely cost-effective. Prevention: remove dust caps and apply penetrating oil 24 hours before any bleeding operation. Use a correctly fitting six-point box spanner — never an adjustable wrench — and apply steady, controlled torque. Heating the caliper body around the nipple with a heat gun softens corrosion products and significantly improves penetration.

Leaking nipple: A nipple that does not seal correctly when tightened — due to a damaged tapered seating face or debris on the seat — allows air to be drawn into the circuit after bleeding and allows fluid to weep past the seat. Replace leaking nipples immediately — they are inexpensive and critical to system integrity.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Regular Cap Inspection: Check that rubber dust caps are present on all bleed nipples at every brake service. A missing cap allows corrosion and debris to build up on the nipple hex and inside the dust cap recess, accelerating seizure. Replace missing caps — they are available in bags of ten for minimal cost.

Level 2 — During Every Brake Fluid Change: Apply penetrating oil to each nipple and allow it to soak for at least one hour before attempting to open. Use the correct hex size six-point spanner. Open nipples in a controlled manner and clean threads before retightening. If a nipple cannot be freed without risk of snapping, stop and use a proper nipple removal tool or have a workshop extract it before proceeding.

Level 3 — Professional Nipple Replacement: If a nipple is damaged but not yet snapped, a replacement nipple of the correct thread and taper specification can be fitted. Calipers with multiple damaged nipples or a snapped nipple should be replaced as a complete unit — the cost of extraction is rarely justified compared to a remanufactured caliper.
