What it is

Axle seals are lip seals pressed into the differential housing where the axle shafts exit, preventing differential gear oil from leaking out along the axle shaft while allowing free rotation. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, there is one seal per rear axle shaft. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, axle seals are located where the CV axle shafts enter the transaxle on both sides. The seals consist of a steel outer case with rubber or PTFE lip elements that press against the axle shaft with spring tension. Failure results in gear oil leakage that can contaminate brakes if the axle shaft runs near the brake assembly — significantly reducing braking effectiveness.

What it does

Differential gear oil operates under pressure inside the housing and must be contained while the axle shaft rotates at wheel speed. The axle seal's spring-loaded lip maintains constant contact with the shaft's polished sealing surface, preventing oil from escaping past the rotating shaft. The seal must remain effective across a wide temperature range — from cold start below -20°C to operating temperatures exceeding 120°C — while accommodating slight shaft movement in service. A secondary dust lip on many seals prevents road grit and water from entering from outside, extending the life of the primary sealing lip.

What goes wrong

Lip wear and sealing failure: The rubber sealing lip wears against the shaft surface over time, losing its ability to maintain a seal. Early leakage appears as an oil film on the inboard face of the wheel; progressive failure leads to dripping and contamination of brake components.

Shaft surface wear groove: The shaft creates a polished groove at the seal contact point over long service. Installing a new seal on a worn shaft results in immediate leakage — the groove must be addressed with a repair sleeve or shaft replacement.

Over-pressurisation from blocked breather: A blocked differential breather vent creates positive pressure inside the housing, forcing lubricant past seals prematurely. Always check and clear the breather vent when replacing axle seals.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Monthly Monitoring: Inspect the inner edge of each rear wheel monthly for gear oil — a brown oily film or wetness on the brake backing plate indicates axle seal leakage. Address leaks promptly — gear oil on brake shoes significantly reduces braking effectiveness.

Level 2 — Leak Investigation: When a leak is confirmed, assess the axle shaft sealing surface before installing a new seal. A worn groove requires shaft replacement, a sleeve repair kit, or fitting the new seal at a slightly different depth. Clean the seal bore thoroughly before installation. Clear the differential breather vent.

Level 3 — Professional Replacement: On integral carrier rear axles, axle shaft removal requires unbolting the bearing retainer or C-clip removal inside the differential — professional tools and expertise required. Always refill differential with the correct oil type and quantity after seal replacement.
