The axle hub nut (axle nut, spindle nut, or half-shaft nut) is a large-diameter nut threaded onto the splined end of the CV axle shaft that passes through the wheel hub bearing assembly. It clamps the wheel bearing inner races and hub assembly firmly onto the CV axle stub shaft, maintaining correct bearing preload and preventing axial movement. Axle nuts are typically 30–40mm across flats and are torqued to 200–350 Nm to ensure they cannot loosen under cyclic loading. Most modern axle nuts are single-use components with a prevailing torque feature — nylon insert, distorted thread, or cotter pin — that prevents self-loosening. They must always be replaced whenever removed.
The CV axle shaft is splined to pass through the wheel hub, and the hub bearing is mounted on this shaft. The axle nut clamps the entire stack together with controlled clamping force, setting the correct bearing preload. Bearing preload eliminates internal clearance while allowing smooth rotation. Too little preload (loose nut) causes bearing play leading to rapid wear and wheel wobble; too much preload (overtightened nut) causes overheating and premature bearing failure. The nut must be secured against loosening — vehicle specifications use deformed threads, cotter pins, or crimped retaining features to achieve this.
Incorrect torque: Both overtightening and undertightening cause wheel bearing problems. Undertorqued nuts allow bearing play; overtorqued nuts overstress the bearing. Always use a calibrated torque wrench — never estimate or use an impact wrench.
Reused single-use nuts: Prevailing-torque nuts lose their locking capability after removal. Reusing them risks gradual loosening in service — potentially catastrophic if the hub works loose at speed.
Cross-threading: The axle nut's large diameter and fine thread make it vulnerable to cross-threading during installation if not started carefully by hand before applying tools.
Level 1 — Pre-Work Preparation: Before removing a wheel bearing or CV axle, ensure a replacement axle nut is on hand — never plan to reuse the old nut. Confirm the correct nut size and thread specification for the specific vehicle.
Level 2 — Correct Installation: Always start axle nuts by hand to verify thread engagement before applying tools. Torque to the manufacturer's specification with a calibrated torque wrench. Apply the specified locking method — bend a new cotter pin, crimp the nut into the axle groove. Never use impact wrenches to tighten axle nuts.
Level 3 — Torque Verification: After any work involving axle nut removal — wheel bearing replacement, CV axle replacement, brake work — verify the axle nut is correctly torqued before returning the vehicle to service. Missing or loose axle nuts are a serious road safety hazard.
