What it is

ABS wheel speed sensors are electronic sensors mounted at each wheel that continuously monitor the rotational speed of each wheel independently and transmit this data to the ABS control module. Modern vehicles use one sensor per wheel in a four-channel ABS system, allowing the controller to detect individual wheel deceleration and identify impending lockup at any corner independently. Two sensor technologies are in use: passive (variable reluctance) sensors generate a sine-wave signal by electromagnetic induction as a toothed tone ring rotates past the sensor tip, with signal frequency proportional to wheel speed; active (Hall-effect) sensors are powered directly by the ABS module and produce a square-wave digital signal, functioning correctly at very low wheel speeds including near-stationary. Most vehicles from the mid-1990s onward use active Hall-effect sensors. The sensor body is typically a cylindrical plastic housing threaded or bolted into the wheel knuckle or hub; a harness runs from the sensor to the vehicle's wiring loom. Active sensors are often integrated with the wheel bearing assembly in later designs, requiring bearing replacement to renew the sensor.

What it does

The ABS control module compares wheel speed signals from all four sensors many times per second during braking. Under normal braking, all four wheels decelerate proportionally and uniformly. When a wheel begins to lock — decelerating significantly faster than the vehicle's overall deceleration rate — the module identifies the impending lockup on that wheel within milliseconds. It then commands the ABS hydraulic unit to reduce brake pressure on the affected wheel, allowing it to resume rotation. Once the wheel has regained speed, pressure is reapplied. This modulation cycle (apply — reduce — reapply) occurs 5–20 times per second during ABS activation, preventing wheel lockup while maintaining the maximum braking force the tyre can generate at the edge of traction. The wheel speed sensor data is also used by traction control and electronic stability control systems to identify wheelspin and understeer/oversteer conditions that require intervention. A failed or absent signal from one sensor illuminates the ABS warning light and disables ABS, traction control, and stability control on most vehicles, though the base hydraulic brake system remains functional.

What goes wrong

ABS warning light illuminated with no improvement in braking: A failed sensor transmits no signal or an erratic signal, causing the ABS module to disable ABS function and illuminate the warning light. The base brakes continue to function normally but ABS, traction control, and stability control are inoperative. This is the most common ABS fault and is frequently caused by sensor damage from road debris, corroded connectors, or broken wiring in the harness near the wheel — a high-flex area subject to repeated bending with suspension travel.

Corrosion at the sensor connector: The wheel area is heavily exposed to road spray, salt, and moisture. Connector pin corrosion increases electrical resistance, causing intermittent or degraded signal quality. The ABS module interprets a weak signal as indicating slow wheel speed, potentially commanding inappropriate ABS intervention or triggering a fault code. Clean and seal connectors with electrical contact spray if corrosion is visible.

Tone ring damage: The toothed ring that generates the signal (integral to the wheel bearing in many modern designs) can crack, shed teeth, or accumulate metallic debris that disrupts the sensor's magnetic field. Tone ring damage causes intermittent ABS activation at normal vehicle speeds and is identified by examining the ring for missing or damaged teeth.

How to maintain it

Level 1 — Warning Light Response: An illuminated ABS warning light requires diagnosis — the system has detected a fault and disabled ABS. The base braking system still functions, but ABS, traction control, and stability control are inoperative. Continue driving to a workshop but be aware that emergency braking may cause wheel lockup. An ABS warning light that also causes the standard brake warning light to illuminate indicates a more serious system fault requiring same-day professional inspection.

Level 2 — Inspection and Diagnosis: ABS faults are diagnosed with an OBD-II scan tool that reads ABS-specific fault codes. Codes identify which sensor or circuit has failed. Visual inspection of the suspect sensor, its harness, and the connector at the wheel should be performed before part replacement — many apparent sensor failures are harness damage or connector corrosion rather than sensor failure. Clean corroded connectors before condemning the sensor.

Level 3 — Professional Replacement: Replacing a sensor integral to the wheel bearing requires complete bearing replacement, as the sensor and tone ring are factory-integrated and cannot be separated. This is a significantly larger repair than replacing a separate sensor. Before performing bearing replacement, confirm the bearing has failed independently — replacing a good bearing purely for the sensor is unnecessary cost if a separate sensor is available for the application.
