As the ring rotates with the wheel, the teeth pass the tip of the ABS sensor, alternately increasing and decreasing the magnetic field or triggering the Hall-effect sensor circuit, generating a pulsed signal with a frequency directly proportional to wheel speed. A 48-tooth tone ring on a wheel rotating at 900 RPM generates 720 Hz signal — this granular data allows the ABS module to calculate wheel deceleration rates with sufficient precision to detect impending lockup within a fraction of a wheel rotation. Tone rings are made from magnetic steel (for passive sensors) or magnetic composite (for active sensors). On most modern vehicles, the tone ring is integral to the wheel bearing assembly and cannot be replaced separately.
The tone ring is the physical source of the wheel speed data that drives the entire ABS, traction control, and electronic stability control system. Without an intact and clean tone ring, the corresponding wheel speed sensor produces no signal or an erratic signal, and the ABS module disables ABS function on that channel — or on all channels if the module cannot reconcile the missing data with the remaining three signals. The regular spacing of teeth on the ring is critical — a missing or damaged tooth creates a signal dropout or anomaly that the module may interpret as sudden wheel deceleration, potentially triggering unintended ABS activation at normal driving speeds. The ring must also be free of metallic debris accumulation — iron particles from brake dust or bearing wear can attach to magnetic tone rings and bridge between teeth, degrading signal quality. The tone ring operates passively, requiring no maintenance under normal conditions, but its integrity is fundamental to the correct operation of all active safety systems.
Intermittent ABS activation at normal speeds: The most common symptom of tone ring damage. A missing tooth, crack across a tooth, or metallic debris bridging teeth causes a momentary signal dropout that the ABS module interprets as a wheel slowing suddenly. The module commands ABS intervention, activating the hydraulic unit and causing pedal pulsation at a speed where ABS intervention is inappropriate and unnecessary.
ABS warning light with a single-channel wheel speed code: A completely broken or missing tone ring segment generates a permanent absence of signal on that wheel's channel. The module logs a fault code for that specific wheel speed sensor circuit and disables ABS. A scan tool code pointing to one specific wheel speed sensor should always prompt visual inspection of the tone ring on that wheel before sensor replacement.
Tone ring corrosion on exposed designs: External tone rings (not integrated into sealed bearing assemblies) can corrode, causing tooth profile loss that reduces signal amplitude below the sensor's detection threshold. This is particularly common on rear axle applications where the tone ring is exposed to road spray.
Level 1 — Inspection When Wheels Are Removed: Whenever wheels are removed for brake service or tyre rotation, visually inspect accessible tone rings for missing teeth, cracks, corrosion damage, and metallic debris accumulation. Clean metallic particles from the ring surface with a non-metallic brush if accessible. Any crack or missing tooth requires bearing or tone ring replacement.
Level 2 — At Wheel Bearing Replacement: Tone rings integrated into wheel bearing assemblies are replaced automatically when the bearing is replaced. If a separate tone ring shows visible damage at bearing replacement time, replace the tone ring as well — it is a minor cost increment when the hub is already disassembled.
Level 3 — Professional Diagnosis: If intermittent ABS activation at normal speeds is experienced, have the vehicle scanned for ABS codes and the tone rings inspected before replacing sensors. Tone ring damage is a more common cause of this symptom than sensor failure. If no damage is visible, use an oscilloscope to view the sensor signal waveform at the suspect wheel — a clean, regular waveform confirms the tone ring and sensor are functioning correctly; signal dropouts confirm damage.
